System Restore Removed Administrator Account

Posted: 11-27-2004, 07:29 PM
My father gave me his computer recently and we both had administrator
accounts on the Windows XP Professional Edition it runs. I recently got a
spyware on my computer and decided to use system restore to fix it; big
mistake. System restore removed my administrator priviledges. Now I can't
log on the computer. I've tried to log on in Safe mode but it appears
whoever helped my dad install Windows XP put a password on there too. My
father is currently ill and I can't get his password to log on. What do I
do now? Help!

Dee,
IF you can get far enough into the computer operation to access
Start/Run/then type "control userpasswords2" [minus the quote
punctuation marks], then click "OK". This will open the "User Accounts"
box where you can add accounts/delete/delete passwords/change etc,. DO
NOT delete the "Administrator" account or any other that may listed that
is not familiar. Either delete your dad's account or just remove the
password requirement as well as yours unless you have reason to keep it
DO not use system restore to remove spy ware/add ware or viruses. For
add ware/spy ware, get and keep both "AddAware SE Personal Edition"
[http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/] and Spybot. Search and
Destroy [http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html]. These
are both free. After installation, immediately update them (both have an
update function) and run a system scan.
What type of Anti-Virus Program do you have AND do you keep it updated?
