system sounds will not work after windows upgrade

Just like the subject says after downloading all the new
upgrades for xp pro. I lost all my system sounds and I
can not do anything because it is grayed out. It just
says no sound device. Yet I can listen to cd's and music
on my hard drive. There are no problems with conflicts
and nothing is showing up in the device manager. Has
anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?
