System sounds Won't Play

The volume control icon has disappeared form my system tray and I can no
longer play system sounds. When I go to Control Panel>Sounds, the "Play"
button is greyed out when I try to sample a system sound.

However, I can hear CDs played through Window Media Player.

did you resolve this, as I appear to have the same problem.. up until this
evening (including at work today) I was able to hear sounds - video, ipod,
etc from the laptop speakers or the external speakers. I brought the laptop
home and now I cannot hear any sound!! Also, my volume button is 'greyed'
like yours.

Someone - please help!!

Thank you very much this worked for me, I should of looked at previous
questions before posting my own, thank you very much, sounds are back.

I had installed registry mechanic recentley, that must of interfered with my
registry.
