System Standby Failed

Posted: 10-21-2003, 12:34 AM
New computer, Windows XP, flashes the following dialog:

System Standby Failed.
The Device Driver for 'Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft
Natural PS/2 keyboard' device is preventing the machine
from entering standby. Please close all applications and
try again. If the problem persists, you may need to
update the driver.

The problem persists. Any suggestions what I should do?
Thanks.

Freddy, I am having a very similar problem, have you
discovered a solution??
In addition to standby failure, when I reactivate monitor
by moving mouse my mouse pointer is invisible on the
screen and the only way I have been able to get it
visible again is to restart the entire system.

System Standby Failed --- possible fix
Posted: 10-28-2003, 02:53 AM
Hi Freddy & all,

I have the exact same problem you have and at the bottom
of my message below is the message I received from Sony
support since I have sony computer running with windowXP:

Basically, for my problem, I found that the
file 'Atmhelpr.sys' in the c:\windows\system32\drivers
directory in my computer is date in 1997 (old version).
And soon as I remove the above file from the above
directory (by copying it to an unrelated directory in
D:drive), my problem was fixed. Hence, I am able to put
my computer in the standby mode now.

I hope this would help. Also, please let me know if the
solution to your problem is different from my.

Return to Previous Window
ERROR: The device driver for the PC/AT Enhanced PS/2
Keyboard(101/102-Key) device or the Alps Glidepoint
driver is preventing the machine from entering
hibernation. Please close all applications and try again.
If the problem persists, you may need to update this
driver, or the system reboots in the Microsoft® Windows®
2000 Professional and XP operating systems.

This behavior can occur when a program installs a kernel
mode driver that attaches itself to the standard keyboard
driver (I8042prt.sys). Examples of programs that exhibit
this behavior include, but is not limited to the
following:

* Pgpdisk 6.02 and 6.5 (installs Pgpmemlock.sys and
Pgpdisk.sys drivers)

* Adobe Type Manager 4.0 (installs the Atmhelpr.sys
driver)

Uninstall the program, and contact the manufacturer for
an updated version of the product designed for Windows
2000 or XP.

I had the same problem on my notebook [Acer TravelMate 260, PIII, 640MB RAM, XP Home] for 2 years and yesterday I followed advice given by Dennis Ho, I uninstalled Adobe Type Manager 4.0, rebooted and it is fixed. My notebook now hibernates when requested. A big Thanks to Dennis!
