for some reason my tab windows quit working - and I've tried restoring to an
earlier date to no avail. Is it me, or is it common?

Tabs in IE7 - when you click on file dropdown, and you can open new tab or
open new window, tab option is turned off (grayed out) - I checked and made
sure tabbed browding is enabled - what next?

Problems with IE7 are often caused by third-party add-ons. Run IE7 with
no add-ons (Tools>Manage Add-ons). Possibly you've installed a toolbar
that doesn't play well with IE7. Personally, I suggest that it's better
to uninstall/not install any third-party toolbars for IE.

Further questions about IE should be asked in its newsgroup; you will
find the IE experts there.
