Task Manager
Posted: 10-06-2003, 03:29 AM
On my XP system, I see a new behavior. When I bring up
the task manager, it only stays up for 1 second and then
closes. I have SP1 installed.

I would run a system file checker first.

Just double-click the outer frame and all tabs will be back. Alternately,
download the reg patch and run it.

Task Manager Reset settings. Resolves the problem of missing Task Manager
tabs, menu items etc.

You have a virus. See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency
Copies of Critical XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create
backup, usable copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named
Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder
C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based
on their original file name. The modified file names, allow them to be run.
Open Windows Explorer to C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application
you need. The next revision will allow you to browse for the folder you
want to place the backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker.
This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running
processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and
pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also
copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically. For replies to newsgroup
posts, do NOT include the Running Services, unless its absolutely necessary.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System

Look in the right pane for a value called DisableTaskMgr If found, it
should be set to 0 (zero). If not, right click DisableTaskMgr and select
Modify. Change it to 0. If it doesn't exist, right click in a blank area
of the right pane, select New, DWord value and name it DisableTaskMgr.
Leave it at 0.

You can also control this setting, and many others with the Windows XP
Security Console, available at www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities.

Task Manager

When I 'right click' on the task bar to view the Task
Manager, it appears for a few seconds then minimizes to
the system tray.

When click on the system tray icon that also disappears.
There are no entries in the system or application error
logs either.

Any ideas?

Gary
