taskmgr disappears quickly

Whenever I invoke taskmgr.exe in Windows XP Home Edition,
it disappears after about one second. It doesn't matter
whther I start it by pressing Ctrl-Aly-Del, or running
taskmgr.exe, or any other method, always the same result -
- it disappears before I can even read it. Has anyone
else seen this problem. More impotantly, does anyone know
how to fix it?
