To see the IE cache subfolders and their content in Windows Explorer, type
this in the Run box:

"C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary
Internet Files\Content.IE5"

My problem is somewhat similar, but I'm still having problems. I don't like
any files in the Temporary Internet Files directory to be hidden. They are
not hidden using IE7 with XP, but they are hidden using IE7 using Vista.

I set the Folder Options > View tab area to Show hidden files and folders,
but that did not work on the Temporary Internet Files directory. I also
cleared the check box for Hide protected operating system files--even though
these are not OS files AFAIC.

Still, the Temporary Internet Files directory remains partially hidden. Some
cookies remain visible, but others remain hidden. In particular, I like to
monitor and block certain third-party cookies, but if I cannot see them, I
cannot block them!

I know how to navigate to the the Temporary Internet Files directory through
IE7 and through Windows Explorer. By the way, the Content.IE5 is not present.

Ideas, please? Thank you.

Why is Microsoft trying to hide Temporary Internet Files?

Your Internet Explorer cache is here:
C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
and, possibly, here:
C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Low\Content.IE5

Your Cookies are here:
C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies
and, possibly, here:
C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Lo w

Using Windows Explorer, you can navigate to your Cookies folder, but not to
your actual Temporary Internet Files sub-folders (if you right-click the
Temporary Internet Files folder, at C:\Users\(Your User
Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows, and choose Properties, you will see
how many sub-folders it contains). By using Run, however, you can view
those sub-folders. Besides checking "Show hidden files and folders", "Hide
protected operating system files (Recommended)" must be un-checked in Folder
Options. The Run (Windows key + R) command should work, as per my previous
post, or try "C:\Users\(Your User
Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Low\Content.IE5".

The Temporary Internet Files folder, as it stands, is a special folder that
gives a cookies and cache combo view of those files (the files are really
elsewhere on your computer, as noted above). However, this special view,
effectively, blocks using Explorer from navigating further to its
sub-folders.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, dean-dean!!!

The path to the cookies is what I wanted, and now I can see them. Thank you
again.

Temporary Internet Files

When I try to print a web site image to an Adobe PDF file, Vista states that
for security purposes the pdf file will be placed in a "virtual" temporary
internet file folder, then opens the virtual folder on C drive, but then
doesn't save the file in the folder. I've been able to work around the
problem by disabling all user account control security, but there has to be
an easier way. I'd like to save files without security forcing them to a
specific folder. Ideas? Thanks.

How exactly are you printing? If you click the print icon and select the
"Adobe PDF" printer you will get a message stating that Internet Explorer is
trying to launch an external program. After that warning you can place the
printout anywhere you want.

I do not have it installed, but I presume Adobe still has a bunch of toolbar
add-on stuff for IE? If that is what you are using those run within process
in IE Protected Mode, and they would not have the ability to write to most of
the file system. This is a core security feature of IE in Vista which
prevents rogue web pages from reading and writing files outside a little
sandbox that consists mostly of the Temporary Internet Files. It is correct
that if you disable UAC you also lose IE Protected Mode, and any web page
that manages to run programs on your computer will be doing so with the full
privileges of your user account, exactly the way it worked in Windows XP.
That means they can place files anywhere on your computer, and, of course,
read any files they want and send them to criminals.

Hope this helps.

Hi...I am printing by selecting the print icon and then Adobe PDF, but I
do not get a message abou IE trying to launch an external program. Is
there any other fix for this besides adjusting the UAC? I am running IE
7 and Vista Business...please forgive me for being ignorant-I am pretty
new at some of this.

Thanks!
