Text is all gibbersih.

I accidentally deleted some registry keys with a Mcafee
program. Now when I boot up all of the text is in a
winding type format. This is in windows XP. I was
wondering if there was any way to restore the registry.

Do a system restore from another day, like the day before the problem.

What do you mean, you can't read the start menu at home? Are you at home or
at work?

What you can do is to navigate through the menus at work, print a
picture of the screen and 'fumble' your way around at home.

Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore....Leave your
mouse over System Restore, hit the print screen button. Start Paint
(it's in the Accessories folder) and paste and print the picture. Take
it home and 'fumble' your way through your menus. Use the picture as a
reference to where each folder may be located in the menus.

You may also want to walk through the System Restore at work to get a
'feel' of what to expect in those screens and you may want to print them
off also.

HTH,
Dave

Brett,

From my past experience, I'd advise you not to mess with the registry if
you're not for sure what you're doing. That can totally mess up your
system. Click on this
link(http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.ht...ner&tg=dl-2001) to
download a good registry cleaner named Reg Cleaner. It also performs other
little tweaks. Just install and enjoy!

Hope this helps,
Newtechie

On Wed, 16 Jul 2003 12:14:30 -0700, brett dasilca pondered exceedingly, then
took quill in hand and carefully composed...

| I am at work. My home computer is the one with the
| problem.

- Start > Run
- Enter c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

That will open the System Restore window (use another drive instead of C: if
your Windows folder is on another drive).

If you can't read contents of System Restore well enough to use it, you could
always use your XP CD to do a Repair Install.

- Boot from the XP CD and proceed as if installing XP
- After you hit F8 to agree to the EULA, press r to start the Repair
Install

The Repair Install takes about the same time as an original install, but it's
not supposed to overwrite any of your individual files or settings.

Good luck!

Larc
