The line is busy

Posted: 08-16-2006, 09:21 PM
Upon attempting to send a fax, Fax Monitor tells me, "The line is busy." I
don't know whether it is referring to the line that the modem calls out on or
the line for the fax number I wish to call. In any case, I know that the the
line for the fax number I wash to call is not busy because I can call it on
my phone and hear it ring. I know also that the number it dials out on is not
in use or any other purpose.

I have no trouble using the modem to connect to the internet.

I have successfully used the same modem and fax applications for years. The
most recent such use was a few days ago, before a Windiows update.

I have removed and reinstalled the XP fax accessory. This did not help.

"Fax applications" would indicate more then one; if you do have more than
one, what are they? I ask because third party Fax applications can cause
Windows XP Fax to malfunction. If XP Fax is the only application you use,
you might try restoring your system to a date before the update.

I have only Windows XP Fax.

I am extremely reluctant to use System Restore, but I'll do it as a last
resort.

What do you think about uninstalling and reinstalling my modem?

Thanks for considering my problem.

Hard to tell what that would do, it might help, it might not. XP Fax is way
too particular about what modems it will and won't work with; in many cases
one has to enable PSS logging that requires a number of registry edits to
enable in order to determine exactly what's happening. It's certainly worth
a try, but I have my doubts (the modem still works fine connecting to the
Internet, it should still work with Fax, too); if it should correct the
problem, please let us know. I'll add that I've not had any bad experiences
with System Restore. When I've used it, it either helped or did nothing, it
didn't break anything else.
