The Mystery of Re-appearing Icons!

Posted: 01-21-2009, 09:30 AM
Hi all:
I have several (but not all) users (WinXP and Vista) on a SBS2003 system.
When they delete icons and shortcuts from their desktop they seem to
disappear fine. But at the next logon hey presto! - the deleted icons are
back! Why should this happen, and why does it only happen to SOME network
users and not all?
Can anyone please help - it is happening to me too!
Thanks

Sounds like a roaming profile issue.

Perhaps this is the case?

Roaming profiles are not saved if you log off a Microsoft Windows
XP-based computer or a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer

As others have suggested, it is probably a roaming profile issue. If
that doesn't do it, or even if it does, make certain that these
machines get a good scan for malware. Over the years I have
encountered a couple of similar cases, and one where the icons on the
task bar could not be rearranged or deleted permanently. In each
case, the problem was traced to a bit of malware, though it sometimes
took a couple of days before the definition files caught up. Nothing
recent or specific, but something to check.

Thanks for the response - it's not an NVidia issue (not installed) or a
malware one. As you say it must be a roaming profile issue - but forgive me
for being thick (and a novice) - what IS the issue and how do I fix it????
Thanks

then maybe there is more problems then just that
You experience log off problems on a Windows XP-based, Windows Server
2003-based, Windows 2000-based, or Windows NT 4.0-based computer
