Is there an easy way to switch configurations?

Posted: 10-06-2004, 01:49 PM
I use the family computer for work, the kids for games, etc. All those
system tray programs are not wanted under some computer usage (not all in
the StartUp folder). How can I select different configurations, say at boot
up?

There is an excellent freeware-program for having different desktop
configurations which is called DEXTOP. I don`t remember the download-url
for it, but by searching the GOOGLE I`m sure you can find it.

If you are using XP Pro, you can definitely create another user account for
the kids, or for each one if you/they prefer & password protect your own.
I'm not familiar enough with XP Home to know what its account capabilities
are like.

You can even create different hardware profiles with XP Pro.

Regards

User accounts might help with this. Create an account named GamePlay, for
example. Adjust what programs are allowed to run at startup when this
account is logged on. This might not create a startup that's as "clean" as
you would like for gaming but it's a step in the right direction until you
can figure out something else.

Not all the programs are in the StartUp folder, some like WeatherBug are
elsewhere. How can I get programs like this one to show up only when I want?

Disable the program from running at startup. Use shortcuts for the program
- users can click on one of these to launch it manually -or- place the
shortcut in the startup folders of the users that want to see the program
at startup.

If a program is not currently starting from a shortcut in the start menu,
you need to dig deeper to find out where it's starting. One approach: Open
the program and look for "Settings" or "Options" menus that contain choices
about startup behavior. Start> Run> MSCONFIG can be helpful if there are no
startup options to be found.
