Is there a system log in Windows XP Pro ?

Posted: 03-26-2006, 12:58 PM
Does Windows XP Pro have a system log that automatically keeps a
timestamp and description of every significant event (such as every
bootup and every shutdown)?

If yes, how can it be viewed? how far back does it go?

I believe that just covers what events get put into the security log, but
doesn't touch much on the system or application log, or how to view the
events.

The log viewer is accessed via My Computer->Manage->System Tools->Event
Viewer. You'll find Application, Security and System logs. The size of
each log and the period of time it covers is selected in each log's
"Properties" page.

I addressed the OP's question can it be done. I'll assume the OP has some
kind of savvy and can take it from there.

Well, I answered these specific questions:

"If yes, how can it be viewed? how far back does it go?"

No problem whatsoever with multiple - slightly different - answers to
the same question.

It's actually better to have that

so what was your intention when you responded to Bert's answer saying

"I addressed the OP's question can it be done. I'll assume the OP has
some
kind of savvy and can take it from there. "

If you don't see that you were strongly suggesting "I told him already"
then you don't get the way people speak or write on planet earth.

Maybe, I should have position my response line a little more precisely to
fit your needs, but I didn't.
