is there a way to order the quicklaunch items on the taskbar in XP?

As Milt says, just drag'n'drop.

If your QL area is not wide enough, grab the bar at the right end and
stretch it.

You may have to first Unlock the Taskbar. If the right-end bar of the QL
Toolbar is filled with little dots (almost invisibly small), the Taskbar is
unlocked; otherwise, you'll have to right-click on an unused part of the
Taskbar and remove the check from Lock the Taskbar. If you're not logged in
as Administrator, you may have a problem doing this.
