Third party Samba

Posted: 06-11-2006, 12:06 AM
Anyone got Vista working with SMB? I can seem to log in to Samba, it keeps
insisting on login or password error. I set up encription password so I
don't have to use EnablePlainTextPassword. This is known to be working
because I can login with XP.

Thanks
Mario

You probably need to upgrade your Samba version. Vista will not work with
Samba versions prior to 3.xxx??? (3.06 something I think- can't remember)
without modifying a local security policy setting which I don't really
recommend (your system will be less secure).

Hi Beverly,

Ignoring your recommendation for a minute (!), what is the setting that
needs to be amended to allow SMB shares to work with earlier versions of
Samba? I'm testing Vista on a private network at home and it would be really
useful to access an SMB share on a device which is unlikely to have a Samba
upgrade for a while!

Many thanks,

David

Run secpol.msc

Under Local Policies->Security Options

Change the value of "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level"
from "NTVLM2 responses only" to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security
if negotiated".

Do this at your own risk. Your system will be less secure.
