toolbar mode?

Whenever I used the handy little toolbar mode of WMP 9,
my files stop playing all together, and they turn yellow
with an exclamation point. The error says:

"a necessary WM SDK interface to complete the operation
does not exist at this time"

Do I need different drivers or codecs?
Help!
