Total number of unique cells or number of cells containing a specific word or number

Can anyone tell me how to program Excel to give me either 1) the total
number of cells in a column that contain a unique set of numbers and
words or 2) the number of cells containing a specific word?

I have a spreadsheet with a list of stores and each sale that store has
made of our products (each sale being a new row in the spreadsheet). If
I subtotal this spreadsheet I know how many units of our prouducts each
store has sold but I'd also like to know how many stores have sold our
prouducts and need a count of either the number of "totals" Excel
created when subtotaling or I need Excel to count how many unique
"store XX" there are in a particualr column.

I wouldn't use subtotals. I'd probably use a PivotTable.

What you can do in the first PivotTable is have the store number in the
"row" field, and the product quantity in the "data" field. That'll
just tell you how much product each store sold.

The second PivotTable, I would do the reverse - have the product name
in the "row" field, and then the store name in the "data" field.
That'll give you a count of how many stores sold a particular product.
