My Acer laptop touch pad is so sensitive that if you just rest your finger on
it it will activate whatever the curser is on

Most laptops have ability to set the sensitivity of the touch pad, check
your manual.
On my Dell laptop it is accessed by control panel / hardware / mouse
settings.

Hello paf,
Control Panel > classic view > Mouse > click the large pointer icon >
click Touchpad Settings > adjust Sensitivity by sliding the pointer.
Note : the heavier, the less sensitive.
You might want to try the rest of the options in that window.
