transferring files from old computer to new one

Posted: 12-30-2003, 06:11 PM
Anyone know how to transfer files from an old computer to a new one. I was running a machine with Windows 98, and now have a new machine with Windows XP. I need to transfer some pictures, and MP3's over to my new machine. I obviously can't do it by floppy disc and don't have a zip drive either. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris:
Several methods.
1. (If you have nic cards in each machine,) cross-over ethernet cable
2. via cross-over parallel port cable
3. Slave your old hard drive to your new hard drive and copy them over to
your new drive
4a. buy a $30 CD-R, put it in your old machine, and burn copies of all
your files
4b. buy a $30 CD-R, put it in your old machine, and use WIndows XP
settings and files transfer wizard to burn disks that will transfer all your
files and settings
5. spend $30 on floppy disks and use WIndows XP settings and files
transfer wizard to copy your settings and files to floppy disks (plan on a a
day or so of sitting at your computer swapping floppies)
6. Set up a network between your old computer and your new computer.
Copy your files across the wire.
7. One by one, attatch each file to an e-mail message and send them to a
friend with a CD-R and let your friend burn your files to a CD.
8. Borrow a CD-R drive from a friend, install it in your Win 98 machine,
burn copies of your files to CD. When you are done, pull the drive and give
it back to your friend.

NOTE:
And just what were you planning to do if your hard drive died?
It happens -- have you ever heard the word "Backup Backup Backup"?
