Did you try creating a new folder in your
My Pictures folder (FIle / New / Folder) and
direct the downloaded files to that folder?

No. The pics will not make their own folder. How would the pics know how to
do this?
Before you upload pics from your media card, go to My Pictures folder and
create a new folder. You click on File/New/Folder as John Inzer suggested
and then name the folder something you can easily remember, date and event,
something like:
2007_01_15 Birthday party at Linda
Then you upload your pics to this folder.
