Transferring from XP computer to Vista computer

Posted: 04-12-2007, 01:12 AM
I have to say that i thought i was pretty dang good with computers, but this
vista ordeal has proved me wrong!! i am trying to get my new computer to
network with the old one...the old one is the XP, new is obviously Vista. I
ran the Windows easy transfer program on both computers, but right when i get
to the transfer on the XP, i get an error and it want's to send it to
microsoft...i can't figure out what the problem is....then, i have just
upgraded to DSL and the XP is hooked to the modem by ethernet and the Vista
is connected via wireless to the SAME modem...i tried to do a network from
old computer to new, but i can't figure anything out....!!! is there anyone
that can help eliviate some of this new found stress and aggrivation with
VISTA and how the hect do i get my files off my old computer??!! naturally
the XP computer has a floppy a: drive and a cd drive, but it's not a
writeable and the new computer NATURALLY DOESN'T HAVE AN a: drive, which
would be an easier way to do this...please help...i've gone online and done
everything microsoft tells me and im not sure where i am going wrong...i get
right up to the transfer and the XP kicks out an error and shuts down the
transfer?!!! please help!

Do you happen to have the error message?

Also, is your network working at all? If you go to the Network folder in
Vista by clicking the Start button and then Network, does the XP computer
show up?

Thanks,

Charlene

I have had similar problems and finally got the Vista and XP machines to see
each other after about 5 days of seemingly endless configuration changes. I
cannot even say for sure what the trick was because it took so many changes.
My main comment is that this is pretty darn poor for Microsoft's newest
operating system. It should not be this hard to connect a computer running
the latest and greatest OS to one in the same house running the previous
latest and greatest. Don't even get me started on the issues with the system
not going to sleep automatically - that's covered in another forum! A very
disappointed user.

Check your network discovery setting on the Vista computer. Do this by going
to the Network and Sharing Center (right click on the network icon and then
click Network and Sharing Center). Network discovery needs to be set to "on"
for you to see other computers. Is network discovery on?
