Default Trouble adding laptop running Windows Vista to home network

My desktop PC is an HP Pavilion running Windows XP Media Center. We also have
an HP laptop running Windows XP Media Center. The laptop has connected to the
home network just fine. Our daughter recently purchased a Sony VAIO running
Windows Vista Home Premium. I have tried to connect the new laptop to our
home network for internet and printer sharing but so far all my efforts have
been unsuccessful. The Sony VAIO "sees" other wireless networks but does not
"see" our home network. I have manually added the home network to the Sony's
preferred network connections, but it still does not "see" the home network.
The Vista diagnose feature just gives me a lsit of available wireless
networks and tells me to choose one. Any suggestions?

Do you have "Broadcast SSID" turned off on your router?

No, I did not. I turned it on, and the Vista computer found my home network.
I thought all was solved. I disabled the "Broadcast SSID", which was my usual
setting. The XP computers worked just fine with it turned off, once the
network was recognized. However, upon turning the Vista computer back on, it
could not find the network. Once I enabled the "Broadcast SSID", the Vista
computer found the network. I really don't want to leave the "Broadcast SSID"
enabled, but it looks like I may have to, unless there is a way around this.
