Trying to install XP Pro

Posted: 04-03-2004, 04:16 AM
I'm putting together my own system, and I have a ASUS P4P800-VM with a WD SATA 80G HDD. My prob is, the section in XP setup where you get to select/create/delete partitions, there is an error message that says "this partition cannot be accessed

I tried the XP-SP1 Floppy's but to no avail. I got a Win 98 Startup disk and tried FDISK, but to no avail. Says No fixed disks present

My other PC is a dell and it doesnt have a SATA connection, so I cant even put it in there and try formatting from there

Help please.

You have to press F6 if I recall correctly to load SATA
drivers, when prompted/

Did you get a disk with the SATA drive? Have you looked on
the WD web site?

Have you read the mobo and drive manuals?

On the disk that came with your motherboard. If you don't have it, you can
d/l the drivers from Asus.

Hi Oz

Although, as Jim and S.Heenan have suggested, the F6 method is sometimes
required to introduce third-party drivers for installation on a SATA hard
drive, your mainboard has the fully integrated ICH5 controller which should
use standard IDE drivers that are present on the XP installation CD.

This should enable you to install as normal without having to intervene.

Check that the hard drive cables are correctly and firmly connected.

Check you have the appropriate BIOS settings for the SATA drive - your
mainboard manual should provide this info.

Hope that helps
Pete

Hi again Oz

You may want to check the Asus site for a BIOS update.

The latest version is 1012 and refers to "Fix certain SATA items will
disappear in BIOS setup"

Hope that helps
Pete
