Turn Off Firewall????

Posted: 07-22-2004, 12:05 AM
Several days ago, my son & DIL asked me to set up & check out their new
Dell Dimension desktop system (winXP, 256 MB ram, celeron processor).
In the process of getting their ISP set up, the ISP tech told me to turn
off the Firewall. I was a bit upset by this, & proceeded to question
him. He got rather testy & said, 'Just do it'. The only explanation I
could coax from him was that 'it sometimes causes difficulties' with the
ISP.

Would someone kindly explain why/how the firewall might cause
difficulties &/or conflicts with the ISP? Seems to me that this
isp/tech doesn't care much about their customer's safety.

Was it AOL?
Their software is not compatable with XP's firewall.

No........it is a local ISP in their area. I just can't imagine a
reputable company/technician recommending that Anyone access the net (in
this day & age) without a firewall.
