Turning on USB device hangs system

Posted: 10-20-2003, 04:01 PM
Hi. I have a weird problem on a new system with Asus
P4P800 and Windows XP Pro SP1. I have a USB mouse and a
PS2 keyboard. The mouse works great in USB connection.
If I then turn on another device like my printer (and yet
another type of device connected via USB - no hub), the
system slows down, CPU goes to 100 % and locks up in about
45 s - 1 min.

If I plug the USB mouse via an PS2 adapter in the PS2
mouse port, this above problem does not occur.

What could be wrong? I wouldn't mind using the mouse in
USB port instead....

Hi,

The USB hub only supply upto 500mA; if you connect more
than 1 USB device into the same hub and the USB devices
consume more than 500mA, problems will be happened.
Also, if your power pack is less than 350watt, it may not
be able to supply sufficient current on the 12V cables
and in turn affected the current supply to the USB HUBs.

I use MS wireless optical mouse, though I have plenty USB
hubs in my OS (4 USB1.1 and 6 USB2.0) and I can use the
USB connection for the mouse without any problem, I still
follow MS suggestion to use the USB/PS2 adapter and it
works fine.

No, I don't think it has anything to do with this. I have
430W (true) power supply and I have no HUB. Just the
standard motherboard connections and I only have 2 USB
devices (my optical mouse and that other device being my
printer or digital camera).

Again, I can use the PS2 adapter for the mouse and problem
goes away but I still would like to know what is wrong and
supposedly using the USB mouse is a bit better for fast 3D
game play than the PS2 mouse.

My previous XP system worked fine with the same
drivers/combination....

Can you try a different USB Mouse...maybe it's a hardware problem.
