UAC prevents login

Posted: 05-04-2008, 04:17 PM
After re-enabling UAC,
1 of the 4 users cannot login anymore.

He types as usual his credentials,
the login seems to proceed,
but after a few seconds the login screen is back.

The user who cannot login anymore,
has done updates of Vista.

This user is an Administrator.

3 other others (1 Administrator and 2 normal accounts)
have no problems to login.

Plase help.

Hello Leon,
The update has nothing to do with it, because it applies to the entire
computer, not just one account.
You have 2 choices :
1. log on to the other admin account, do a system restore backdating to
the date before the problem arose. After that, see if the other admin
can login.
2. If it was too long ago, and system restore won't do, then logon to
the "good" admin account, REMOVE the admin account in question ( you can
keep the files except the e-mail messages), recreate an admin account
for that person with a NEW password. Upload the files back to that
person.
Inform me if that works.

Hi,

i did a system restore to a date before the updates.
The problem remains.

also i restored an image of the hard disk.
The image is 1,5 months old.
The problem remains.

i forgot to mention that the admin account with login problems is a domain
account.
He logs in to a domain, not to the local computer.
The 3 other accounts are also domain accounts.

i see this problem now on 2 other computers.
after re-enabling UAC, that admin account cannot login anymore.
The other admin still can, the 2 other (normal) accounts still can.

On at least 4 other computers
the admin account with problems *still can login*,
even after re-enabling UAC.

This evening i will do your last suggestion,
recreate the account.
i will let you know the result of this.

it's a curious situation...
i searched the KB at Microsoft, but found nothing.
did a search on google - nothing to the point.

Thank you for your help.

Pierre

You could delete the account then create a new one.
When you delete you have the option of saving the users files.
You could do a backup first if you like, then a restore after the new
account is created.

t-4-2 and Bender,
many thanks to you both for your ideas.

Here is what i tried yesterday evening:
- i started the computer with Bart's PE.
- copied the dirs of the broken profile to another folder on the disk (of
course not the ntuser*.* files).
- restarted Vista.
- in User Accounts, i deleted the user.
- in System, i deleted the profile.
- checked in Explorer, that nothing was left.
- rebooted Vista.
- logon as Administrator (which is enabled).
- created the user. (set it as Administrator) with another password (that i
had changed before on the server).
- logoff Administrator & login User.
- * i verified that all was working normally, UAC on, network ok, no startup
errors.*
- rebooted with Bart's PE.
- copied the old dirs of USER over the new ones.
- rebooted Vista.
- logon as USER.
- The logon seemed to proceed normally - i was not thrown back to the login
screen.
- UAC on.
- But on the Network icon in the systray, i saw a red cross.
- i opened Network Center, and it said in the upper part: "Access Denied".
- yet i was able to explore the intranet, and to surf on the internet.
- i turned off UAC, rebooted, and all was well in Network Center.

i tried once more the whole procedure,
this time with keeping the old password -
it did not matter.

So basically, it seems that i replaced one problem with another.

Next evening, i'll try what Bender suggests.
That is, save the user files before deleting the user's profile.
And then later on, when the user is recreated,
import them in some way.

maybe by copying all of the files of the old profile,
a problem occurred with some trusts or permissions.

Tomorrow i'll report again.

Thank you,

Pierre

Success!

Before deleting the profile, i exported it.
Now the 3 machines with problems on that one account are working well.
UAC is working, Network Center is ok, updating ok.

i think i will not play around anymore with UAC.
it's a standard feature of Vista,
and maybe it's just meant to work that way.

i only hope they can make it less obtrusive.
Linux and OSX only ask for credentials, i'll like it more that way.
no dimming of the screen, no sounds, no extra questions.

Thank you folks.
