Un responsive disc drives

Hello,
I have been trying for weeks to get my disc drives to work properly. The
file manager shows a fault in drives D: and E: And the message indicates that
the drivers don't work. I have un-installed them and re-installed them from
the internet but nothing has changed. When I click on "My Computer" to see
the tree, the D: & E: Drives are not visible. However, when I put a cd rom in
one or the other, it starts to turn as if reading the CD although I can't see
it. A total re-install is not possible because the disc drives don't work,
and if I do get them to work, I won't need to do a re-installation. Does
anyone have any suggestions that might help? Crossing my fingers and hoping
