Unable to connect to network

Having just purchased a new laptop I was dismayed to find I couldn't connect
to the guest wireless network at the company at which I am contracting.

With my XP laptop, connection is made and then the first attempt to reaqch
the internet results in a login page where I have a company provided
password. After enteringthe password the connection is made to the internet.

The wireless service is open and Vista finds the service and connects but
reports Local Only. Attempts to connect to the internet result in 'IE cannot
display the webpage'.
A look at IPCONFIG says there is an IPV4 (and IPV6) address but no Gateway
listed. Attempts to renew the IP address result in DOS reporting 'Unable to
contact DHCP server'

I have tried all combinations of Private and Public Networks and Discovery.
Even edited the Registry to amend Issues See 933340.

So still no connection and no idea what to try next

Please post the text output of

ipconfig /all

from an elevated cmd prompt when the machine is in the "bad" state.

also post what router model and hardware version and firmware
version (and check for a firmware update)

unfortunately I can tell you the router details - it's a multinational
corporation in a large office block in London.......

The laptop doesn't seem to connect with the DHCP server initially, let alone
after being woken.

try unbinding IPv6 and checking for a newer driver for the wireless.
turn off power management for the wireless NIC as well.

Hi Barb,

Newer drivers became available this month and have downloaded and installed.
Have also deselected IPv6 from the Network connection properties and power
management turned off,- all to no avail. This is not going to be sorted
easily!

The laptop connects to my home and other wireless networks - must be a
difficulty with this router/configuration.

You can check to see if http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941649 is
installed (but I don't think that will improve things if it is on
the router/DHCP side which is definitely what this looks like to
me).

thank you for your help, I'm afraid it looks like something that won't get
resolved. I checked the Update is installed.

Have gone out and bought a 3G cardwhich will get me through this contract.
