Unable to configure fax account

Posted: 10-28-2008, 08:53 PM

In Vista Ultimate the Windows Fax and Scan permits me to edit the fa
settings in tools but denies configuration or establishment of a fa
account. A message is received to the effect that to set up a fa
account it is first necessary to set the fax settings for the modem.
That has been done, but I still can't add or configure a fax accoun
with the same modem. What's the problem

You tell us. State precisely how you set up your fax account. Confirm that
your fax modem is on the VHCL.

Not that I can tell, however the relevant manufacturer's support sit
('D-Link Support' (http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/)) lists the device a
Vista compatible with generic drivers detected and installed by Window
Vista. That has occurred and the driver downloaded from MS is PCI Sof
v92 Data Fax Modem by Conexant Systems Inc. The driver version i
7.66.0.0 and is digitally signed as Microsoft Compatibility hardware.
I've tried setting up WFS in elevated mode to no effect. I ca
configure the modem OK, and receive faxes by having them printed out i
options, but I can't set up a fax account

Read the VHCL.
Answer my question.

Well, I can't set up a fax account, that's the problem. In WFS, under
tools, I go to fax settings. There the modem is recognized and I can
configue it however which way I like. That's not the problem. The
problem is that when I go to WFS Tools, fax accounts I can go through
the process but the modem I have previously configured doesn't seem to
be recognized at all. Any attempt to set up a fax account fails with a
message to the effect that the modem needs to be set up first, which has
been done in the previous step.

As to the VHCL, neither the D-Link nor the Conexant modem are listed at
all. The appropriate driver for the hardware has been installed by
Vista and I can use other fax programmes (eg Snappy Fax) without
compatability issues.

I trust that answers your question...

It does. I trust it answers yours as well.
You need to use a compatible modem.

No , it means Microsoft/Vista needs to create compatable software. I don't
like the attitude of Microsoft or your responses to this poster.

Russ can address your personal comments to him if he wishes, but you're
missing the point. The OP has Vista Ultimate and so has a fax program in
Windows. Microsoft doesn't need to create anything for him/her. What the OP
needs (and seemingly doesn't have) is a modem that supports faxing. IOW,
s/he needs the right hardware and it doesn't sound like s/he has it. Not
all modems support faxing. I hope that has clarified the issue for you.

Nothing to add. You've said it quite well, thanks. Some folks simply don't
like reality and choose to blame the messenger.

Go back and read the part where the OP says, "I can use other fax programmes
(e.g. Snappy Fax) without compatability (sic) issues." The modem obviously
DOES
support faxing.
