Unable to connect to SSID

Posted: 09-11-2006, 03:02 PM
I've been unsuccessful in connecting to a wireless router that is not
broadcasted. I've troubleshooted the obvious, and Vista says the SSID
already exists, but is not listed to connect. It's a Linksys router and a
TrueMobile 1350 wireless card.

Turn on SSID broadcasting while connecting, then turn it off again. Or just
leave it on after you connect, as turning it off is not a valid security
precaution.

Yes, theoretically, leaving a ssid as hidden is less secure than one which
is broadcasting.

This is because if you have a profile on your machine for a hidden ssid,
then everywhere you go, your machine will always be sending out the names of
all the hidden ssid profiles (since it will constantly be scanning for them
to connect to). For networks which are not hidden, your machine will just
quietly wait until it sees the network is visible.

Aside from that, have you tried diagnosing the problem? What does it say?

You can take wireless traces by:

1. Launch an elevated command prompt
2. netsh wlan set tra yes
3. Reproduce the problem
4. netsh wlan set tra no (make sure this is still in an elevated command
prompt, and wait for the command to complete)
5. Tracing results will be in %windir%\tracing\wireless
