Unable to read cd's from cd drives

Any cd inserted into either drive D: (cd-rw) or drive E:
(dvd-rom) i'm unable to read / open files or program. If
i put a music cd in the drives, windows explorer will not
detect disc in the drive, but if i open media player the
music cd is recognise and i'm able to play it.
I'm still able to copy music cd using Nero and it plays
in media player.
This only happened after a friend asked me to check files
on a cd after being in his computer.
No virus was detected, using Nortons.
Any help would be appreciated.
