unable to update Windows xp with SP1

I have tried several times this year to upgrade my windows xp with the
service pack 1a. When it is completed and I reboot, I get no icons on the
desk top and am unable to do anything. The mouse pointer works but that is
it. Once I uninstall the windows XP Service Pack 1, everything works fine
again!
I am running a Sony PCV-RX670. I have decided I will not try to upgrade
this again but am curious why I am getting this problem.
