Unable to use secondary HDD

The orignal HDD, having being diagnosed as having some bad
sectors, was replaced recently and set up as the slave.
Although XP can 'see' the drive, I cannot access it. I
have unsuccessfully tried the drive on several other PCs,
both XP and Win 98. If all else fails, is it possible to
extract the data from the drive? Grateful for any advice.
