"Unknow Device" problem with USB devices

Posted: 08-28-2003, 08:21 PM

I have two different kinds of external hard drives that use USB.
My XP has the service pack 1 installed which should install USB 2.0
drivers.

My computer sees each HD as an "Unknown Device" and I don't 'see' them with
file explorer. From memory, MS drivers have version 5.1.2600.1101 and dates
sometimes in July 2002. However my drivers are dated 2001 but have the same
drivers version. My MB's chipset is VIA and I downloaded their latest
driver package but it didn't include any USB drivers. My MB's site doesn't
have drivers online. The devices don't have their own drivers. They are
supposed to be plugged in and visible by Windows.

Anyone have any suggestions? I am going to give up and buy me another
motherboard. I am not sure if it's a hardware or software problem.
