Unknown Device - How Do I Solve This ?

Sorry to bother you with this old item. I have tried installing a USB to
parallel (IEEE 1284) bi-directional cable on XP (HE) and the famed "USB
unknown device" has appeared. I have downloaded the supposed fix from
Packard Bell (NEC) site and that, together with all others from DriverGuide
etc etc have all failed.

Does anyone by chance have an idea as to how I can rectify this ?
