Upgraded XP-Pro SP2 -> SP3, now no access to printer/shares

Posted: 01-24-2009, 12:06 AM
My XP-Pro SP2 PC was upgraded to SP3 2 days ago. The PC is attached to
a domain that is not local (it is accessed now and then via VPN
tunneling).

After the upgrade to SP3 my wife's XP-Home SP1 PC can no longer use
the printer I have attached to my PC and shared on the LAN. She can
also not access the file shares she used to reach. :-(

I have tried deleting the drive mappings on her PC and recreated them
and then entered the user/password for a number of known good accounts
on my XP-Pro PC, but to no avail. It stays unconnected!

The XP-Home PC is attached to a workgroup with exactly the same name
as the domain my PC is attached to.

What has happened and how can I fix it???

I have now checked that if I try to connect to the shared
folders/printers from a laptop on the LAN it works OK.
The laptop is connected to a *different* domain than my desktop PC 8it
is my work PC) and is running XP-Pro SP2. Yet it works fine when the
domain account logged in on the laptop (on the different domain) has
the same user/password as a local account on my SP3 PC.

Questions:
-----------
1) Does it matter if the connecting SP1 PC runs XP-Home as opposed to
XP-Pro?

2) Is the problem that connections from XP-Home SP1 (or XP-Any SP1)
are no longer permitted to an XP-Pro SP3 machine?

It does not matter is it is XP Home or Pro nor which SP level is used,
the workgroup must be correctly set up.

XP Home does not let you connect to any domain.

Make sure that you correctly configure the Simple File Sharing.

But it did work for many years before I updated the XP-Pro to SP3
level. With SP2 I had no problem....

I did look for this setting in the XP-Home PC (to switch it off
actually) but did not find any. I have it switched off in the XP-Pro
because I have software that needs the NTFS file security settings.

New info:
After upgrading from XP-Home SP1 to SP2 the same problem remains.
There is a complaint that there is no logon server available to handle
the request...

So How are you supposed to use a printer on an XP-Pro SP3 PC from an
XP-Home SP2 PC? Is it impossible so my only options are to either
downgrade the SP3 PC to SP2 or upgrade XP-Home to XP-Pro?

And is a Home => Pro upgrade simply a matter of installing Pro on top
of home???

You need to:

1) Configure to use Workgroups and not Domains. Domains are required
for connecting not Windows Servers and only XP Pro can connect to
domains. XP Home can not connect onto domains.

2) Enable Simple file sharing

3) Create the user accounts on all PCs.

I did not want the XP-Home computer to connect to any domain, just to
the printer and two shares on my XP-Pro SP3 PC. This PC is a member of
a domain and needs to be.
>2) Enable Simple file sharing
Not available on Home, and cannot be used on my Pro because of the
permissions issues for a lot of the software I use on this machine.
>3) Create the user accounts on all PCs.
Already in place since many years, my wife's accounts exists as local
account on my XP-Pro PC.

Final solution
--------------
I upgraded the XP Home to XP Pro SP2 and then also installed SP3. The
so upgraded PC is now attached to a workgroup named "HOME" (different
from the domain name).
I also mapped a drive letter on that PC to my primary PC using her
local account login and "reconnect at startup" checked.
After this both the printer and the shares work. :-)
