Upgrading from 98SE to Win XP Pro -- how to detect...?

Posted: 03-13-2009, 01:05 AM
Hi,

I'm upgrading from Win 98SE to XP Pro (don't ask) using a genuine Win XP
Pro upgrade disk (academic license, not that it matters). When I boot from
the XP pro CD and begin the upgrade, it says "Windows XP cannot detect a
previous version of Windows installed on your computer... [please insert the
original media]". That works, but when I insert the original 98SE disk, it
asks me what partition I want to install XP on, seemingly still not
detecting the original install...?

So the problem is that I want to *upgrade* the original 98SE install to
XP pro, not just install XP pro. Is there a way to get it to detect the
original installation correctly? Is it not detecting it because my windows
98 directory on the C:\ drive is named Win98 instead of "Windows"...? Does
it have anything to do with the location of the CAB files? Is there
anything else that could be causing it to not detect the original install?

Also, if I go ahead and insert the 98SE disc and I choose a partition, is
it going to give me another chance to upgrade the original 98 install, or
will it then only install XP in parallel, rather than do the upgrade?
Anyone know for sure?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

To boot to xp cd will or should only give you the option of a clean xp
install-
ation (this would format the hd),if "upgradeing" from 98 to xp then you need
to install xp cd when in 98 desktop. This way 98 is still installed & the
upgrade
will proceed.....

That would be ideal, yes. Unfortunately, this new system I'm upgrading
the drive for is made up of all new hardware which there are no Win 98
drivers for. I could barely get it into windows, much less get it to access
a USB drive or CD drive. Any other ideas?

Why are you booting from the XP installation CD? Have you tried starting the
computer and doing the upgrade from within the current Windows 98
installation.

Good luck

I'm unable to get it to do anything in Windows 98 (and can in fact barely
get it to boot to 98) because the drive is in entirely new hardware for
which the manufacturer doesn't provide (and in many cases has never
provided) Windows 98 drivers. Which is the only reason I'm upgrading to Win
XP in the first place, because I eventually had to if I wanted to continue
to upgrade the hardware. Otherwise I'd be perfectly happy staying with 98.

Anyway, it seems I have no choice but to boot from the CD, as the mobo,
chipset, USB drivers, etc. are all recent vintage and no-go in win 98.

Why are you doing it this way. That is asking for trouble. Format the Hard Drive and
stick XP in and let it start the install. When it asks for a qualifying product then
stick in your Win 98 CD as proof. You will have a clean install of XP Pro with no
issues because of installation and old files left over from Win 98

Yes, I am aware of the advantages of doing a clean install and of the other
alternatives. That's not what I'm asking, though. I was asking if anyone
knew why the original Win98 installation is not being detected properly and
how to rectify that.
