If I were to upgrade my computer that is currently running
Windows ME to Windows XP Pro, using the upgrade version
would all of my infomation such as documents,
applications, pictures, songs etc. remain on my computer
or would they all be deleted?

If upgraded properly, everything would remain on the computer. This does
NOT mean that even if you do everything right, you might not run into
trouble, but you have a better chance if you do things carefully and
methodically.

Download and install and use the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor. I think Paul
Thurrott's explanation is thorough on this:
http://tinyurl.com/ndth

Make sure you have drivers already downloaded (and burned to CD if you can)
for Windows XP and your Video Card, your sound card, your modem, your
network card, your motherboard chipset, your scanner/printer/other external
devices and so on. Doing this before you go buy will do two things:

1) Make sure that XP supports the device in question.
2) Save you time in case XP needs these files while upgrading.

After doing that - BACKUP ALL CRITICAL FILES! Anything COULD happen. Why
take the chance on everything working perfectly?

Make sure you follow the advise of the upgrade. If it finds applications it
will have issues with, UNINSTALL those applications before installing XP.
Download the latest/greatest version of that application or take note that
you may have to upgrade to maintain system stability.

I would say DON'T convert to NTFS just yet - during the install - wait a
couple of weeks, make sure XP is working correctly, then go into "Help and
Support" and look up "Convert to NTFS" - THEN do it.

And if you upgrade and for SOME reason cannot find your files, don't panic.
SEARCH the drives for one or two of your files. You'll likely find them.

computer. It will not restart window me, but tries to
cintinue with the xp pro install, crashing again at 18
minutes out.

You will need to boot to ME boot disk and run the command,
sys c: Then reboot, this will stop the xp pro batch
running so you can continue with ME.

Before installing XP ensure Hardware is capable and that
you ME system is in good order before install, good luck !

Upgrading from ME to XP Pro
Posted: 11-04-2004, 12:15 AM
In short I have used the Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft to confirm that my
system can be upgraded from ME to XP Pro. There were some issues with my
chipset but the advisor says they are not 'upgrade killers.' During the
upgrade process it notifies me that the following file cannot be found
"c\$win_nt$.~ls\i386\system32\smss.exe" if I try to ignore it and continue
every file after that seems to be unreadable.
In the MS message boards I found a suggestion about copying the I386 folder
from the CD to the hard drive and upgrade from my hard drive. I tried that
and it hangs up at something about "cannot copy 40: access denied" when
trying to copy a file called "40a.cab".
What I am to do is upgrade my OS so that I can MS Excel instead of that
"wussy" MS Works spreadsheet program. If it would be easier to find an older
copy of Office then try to upgrade, what version of Office would work with ME?

So many questions, so slow at typing, oh well.

Any help or suggestions that anyone has please post. This is my first time
posting to a board so forgive any newbie goofs I commited. Just point them
out and I will learn.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

As the Upgrade Advisor has already warned you to expect problems
with the motherboard's chipset, you might check with the motherboard's
manufacturer to see if there's a BIOS upgrade that can provide better
WinXP-compatibility.

A chipset issue does not necessarily require a BIOS upgrade but it sure
requires a check of the motherboard manufacturer's web site to see if there
are new drivers for the chipset.
