upgrading my 500mhz system

Hi,

It is not a upgrade, it is building a new OS.
If you use XP retail version CD, you can clean install XP
and re-activate windows; you may need to call MS toll
free for a new key. For OEM version, there may be trouble
when you re-activate windows.

The power supply that works with your old motherboard and
CPU will not work with a new 2.4 GHz Intel P4 or Celeron
CPU. So you need to replace just about every piece to do
the upgrade you're talking about.

You are really talking about building a new computer, which
sounds like a good idea. The question is do you scrap your
old computer or keep it as a backup or for secondary
purposes.

If it has been more than 120 days since you activated
Windows, when you re-install Windows and re-activate it will
work on the Internet just like it did the first time.

You forgot the RAM, Jim. A P3 500MHz (I'm assuming that's what it is) takes
PC100/133 DIMMs which, obviously, will be useless if he upgrades to a P4
2.4GHz. He needs PC3200 for that system.

You are correct that a new motherboard will also require
compatible RAM.

The bottom line, upgrading a system that is more than a year
or two old will cost as much as buying a new computer. You
can build your own and get exactly what you want and no more
but that will likely cost more than buying a customized DELL
since they get volume discounts.
