Upon Clean-Installing WinXP, ...

Hi,

Click on Start/Run and enter MSCONFIG. Flip to the 'boot.ini' tab and click
on 'Chack all boot paths'. This will remove any mention of a invalid boot
path from the boot.ini file.

Your help is deeply appreciated. And, my machine is now booting right into
Windows.

But, Is there some way, though, it can be "edited" out, just as "safe mode"
can be edited in?

And, I have no qualms about editing the registry, IF that's what it takes.

yes there is but you don't need to use the registry.

1/ Go to Control Panel
2/ Click the System icon
3/ In system properties window click Advanced tab
4/ Look towards the bottom of the Advanced window for a section marked
'Startup and recovery'
5/ Click the Settings button in this section
6/ In the Startup and recovery window look under the 'system startup
section' and click the Edit button
7/ This will open the boot ini file for editing in Notepad
8/ Edit the boot ini file so that it looks like this: Please note that you
should save a copy of the boot ini to a floppy before making any
alterations. If anything goes wrong and your pc doesn't boot after the
alterations you can always copy the origianl boot ini file back from the
floppy disk to the C: drive. If you are using XP Home then change the second
line of the boot ini file accordingly.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect


9/ After making the alterations go to File on the main notepad toolbar and
select Save to save the new boot ini file.
10/ Exit notepad, system properties and control panel and then reboot your
machine. You should boot straight into windows xp.
