USB Hard Drive

Posted: 10-13-2006, 01:38 PM
I have a Western Digital external USB hard drive. It works fine in Windows
XP, and even works fine on another Vista machine (with completely different
hardware). However, when I connect it to my Vista RC1 machine, I get the
following error in a bubble in the bottom right corner:

USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and
Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click
this message.

When I click the message, it displays a list of Unknown Devices attached to
the Root USB Hub.

Other USB devices work, though I don't have any other USB Mass Storage
devices to try. Nothing shows up with a question mark or exclamation point
in Device Manager and I have downloaded as many Vista-compatible relevant
drivers as I can find.

The computer has an MSI motherboard with nVidia NForce 3 chipset. nVidia
has released drivers for the audio and networking portions of the chipset,
and that's it. I'm wondering if that is part of the problem.

Has anyone else had problems with receiving that error message when plugging
in external USB drives? If so, please share any techniques that have helped,
as well as any other suggestions you might have for my situation.

Thanks,

Pete.

I have the same problem with my USB stick. It works fine with XP but
Vista gives me "USB device not recognized"-message.

I have a WD3200 Media Driver with the following issues:
Doesn't seem to install properly, and shows a problem in Device manager,
can't access it, does not show up in file explorer. Same problem on 3
different computers - all are on RC2 with all updates installed.

I also have Speedzter2 external drive that has the same problem.

Both drives were unreliable (USB) on XPPro as well - seems like there is
some kind if flaky problem related to USB drives as the USB ports themselves
work fine for other connections.

Both these drives have firewire and both work well when connected via
firewire.

One last problem with the WD3200 - the card read keeps bouncing in and out
on the file explorer - it's there, then it's not. Happens rather rapidly -
this is using firewire connection.

Finally, I was able to get my generic USB hard drive to work with Vista
64 Ultimate.

In Device Manager, find your USB hard-drive (most likely it has a
question mark next to it) update the drivers and browse your computer.

Use the folder C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

and have it automatically search sub-folders. It may detect multiple
devices, just use the same path.
