USB modem installation & hardware wizard

Posted: 09-17-2006, 12:17 AM
Evaluation.Copy.Build.5600

When trying to install any ADSL (USB) modem with the original supplier's
CD-Rom, the Vista hardware wizard pops up, telling me Microsoft needs to
access the web to install drivers.
Of course I can't connect yet, so that's why I'm trying to install a
DSL-modem, but the wizard terminates and the drivers are not installed.
Locating drivers on the original CD-Rom won't work.

Am I hallucinating or is this really a serious Release Candidate?

The UAC was the first pain in the neck I disabled, but how the heck do I get
rid of that hardware wizard?

Hi Moon

not much help, but may be worth a try: installaing either of my two modems
has been driving me mad. Acc to the Upgrade advisor neither was compatible
with Vista (in fact i get the impression that Vista only wants to run with
routers or Ethernet).

Anyway, like you, in desperation I downloaded the latest driver for one of
them and kept it on the computer (in another partition !!). I simply found
the driver install file from Computer in Vista and installed it from there
directly, thus bypassing the **** Hardware Wizard. It installed fine.

NOW how do i get onto the Internet: I got on once but then had to re-install
Vista (it fell over) and although the modem installs OK I cannot get any
action.
