USB Multicard reader will not work with XP's Mass Storage Device driver (Generic
Posted: 09-18-2003, 06:10 AM
I have put considerable time amd effort into trouble
shooting this problem: Serveral Multicard USB readers I
have tried to get to work with 2 diferent dell systems
(Dimension) are causing apparent interrupt request
overloads with XP Professional SP1 O\S... New current
system is running P4 2.8 gigs(HT) with 800MHZ FSB and
processor time with USB card reader plugged in is running
at 50 - 60% usage (overheating too!) when other aspects
of system are IDLE!! No way a little usb reader should be
drawing that much resource power from that kind of
processor... upon install (plug in) I recieve warnings
that Microsoft's generic driver for this device (USB MASS
STORAGE DEVICE DRIVER) is not compatitble for seveal
readers I have tried to get to work so far, and is
not "digitally signed" (why not, especially with SP1??)
I select the option "Continue Anyway" and the device
works through issuing individual warnings and then
loadind a series of 8 drivers in 2 classes one at a time
but the first problem I mentioned occurs after a short
period of time! Device manufacturer's say that drivers
for the devices I have tried so far are native to XP and
therefore are not supplied with installation CD's only
win 98, 2000... No Updated version of (usbstor)seems to
be available on windows update website and no updated XP
SP1 drivers are available on manufacturer's websites
(Addonics, SIIG purchased thus far) Other problems occur
such as "disappearance" of installed IDE Optical drives
from msinfo.exe listing when usb reader is plugged in
(still listed \ working in device manager though!)and
128MB videocard performance is affected too... As a last
resort I tried, (with local tech assistance, hardware >>
the man does not write code! We live in the virgin
islands...) aceessing the BIOS and disabling a few non -
essentials in hopes that on reboot the system would free
up\ reconfiqure enough IRQ's to allow a silly USB card
reader to run without cooking my processor! ( my Laptop
would generate stop error messages with the same O\S and
card reader on booting, seems ok now after BIOS tinkering)
But This did not work with desktop after networking
kicked in; problem (processor time usage \ stress)
reappeared 1\2 hour after reboot with small packet
transfer... I'm pretty much out of ideas on this and I
suspect the native XP Pro drivers for USB Plug and Play
memory card readers are either poorly written or are
obsolete, the average user should not have to go though
this, and probably can't (and I now know more about these
machines than I really wanted to!)Is there a Microsoft
tech here that can guide me to a solution on this problem
that I might have overlooked? or can recommend a usb 2.0
reader that (really) will work with XP pro SPl? >>
$295.00 for a Tech support phone call on this seems
pretty steep and not really cost effective at this
distance from mainland US... and Dell (Puerto Rico)is
claiming ignorance even though the O\S is OEM and 3 mos.
old... I need to use these readers for my business! Is
anyone out there??
Many thanks
