USB Printing Support

Posted: 08-07-2003, 12:58 AM
I recently installed a new motherboard and XP. When
connecting my DeskJet 970 CSE using USB to the PC,
everything works fine. However, upon restarting, reboot
is slow and I get a ! next to my USB Printing Support
with the following message under device status:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware
because there is a duplicate device already running in
the system. (Code 42)

Any advice?

I suspect that you have to be sure that you have installed things according
to HP's rules. You could try removing all HP software and then remove the
printer and then disconnect it from the computer. Install the HP software
and switch the computer OFF. Connect the printer and then switch ON the
computer and XP should find and install the printer and driver. ( this
should be the XP driver from HP which you have down loaded to disk )

You'll find a copy of the i386 folder in the Windows folder on your c:\
drive. Point it at that.

How do i get usb printing support installed in win xp? I
am tring to install a HP printer but it doesnt reconize
it when I plug in the usb port. It gets installed as an
unknown device. If anyone knows how to resolve this
please help. Under usb devices there should be USB
PRINTING SUPPORT but I cant seem to find out how to add
that...I think that is why it does not reconize the
printer.

Thanks

You MUST install the driver software BEFORE connecting the printer to the
PC.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T41 that I tried to install an Epson Stylus Photo R300
USB printer on.
It is looking for the USB 2.0 MFP (Hi-Speed) driver.
Two items that are NOT listed under USB Serial Bus Controllers in Device
Manager are:
USB Printing Support
USB Composite Device
Without these components installed hte ThinkPad can not communicate with the
printer.

Any help would be appreciated.

USB2.0 drivers are included in SP1 and SP2.

I have the same problem...It is not corrected by installing SP2 and I
already had SP1 on the machine.
