USBscan.sys file needed - scanners dont work

I have installed several new scanners onto a WinXP Pro
system. None of them work.
A 4in1 Lexmark 5150 model - prints but dont scan.
A Canon Casnoscan LiDE 30 - shows in device manager but
dont scan.
A HP officejet 5510 all-in-one model - doesnt print
successfully all the time and never scans.
All connect via USB.
I have erased and reinstalled all the software and the OS
which came with this new Gateway laptop.
my research points me to a Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 320549 to get the USBscan.sys file.
Did I mention that I am a tech by trade and still cannot
resolve this issue.
