| I have now been using Vista as the sole user (therefore administrator) on my PC. When the user account control is on, I cannot open Internet Explorer: a message pops up which means: "Internet Explorer does not work anymore, Windows is searching a resolution" When I turn off the user account control, I work with Internet Explorer without problem … but have permanent security alert reminder about desactivated user control. -- a French Vista User | Guest

| Bilou It's likely that you have an add-on in Internet Explorer that is causing this. Try running IE without any add-ons. To do this, follow these steps. Right click an empty spot on the Desktop and select New/Shortcut from the menu. In the "Type the location of the item" line place the following: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff (Including the quotes and space) Click Next, Click Finish. Double click this shortcut to start IE. You will see a page about starting IE with add-ons disabled. Click the Home Page icon and then do some navigating to make sure it works. | Ronnie, Thanks a lot for your proposed resolution. Unfortunately, it does not fix the problem, I receive the same message: "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close and notify you if a solution is available." a) Referring to thread posted 2/3/2007 in Internet Explorer Discussion Group, "IE7 errors with Vista", I implemented resolution as described 2/4/2007 by Frank Saunders (MS-MVP) : my conclusion is that I (apparently) have no spy-ware (Lavasoft Ad-aware), no virus (Norton), no registry error (Uniblue registry booster2). b) Because IE works fine when I deactivate users account control, I believe I have no conflict with other installed softwares (OmniPage ?). Referring to KB 936215, I read (in French re translated in English) that Receiving an error message may be due to - Conflict with other software (I don't believe). - Damaged user account - Viruses, spywares , …(I don't believe). - Config / compatibility problems I created a test user (standard) and received the same problem message. | Bilou You might want to check for the exact error that is occuring. Go to Start and type: eventvwr.exe in the search box. Click the Event Viewer to open. In the left pane, click on Custom Views/Administrative Events. Look for any red icon error messages there that coincide with the date/time that the error last occured. If you find any, double click the error and at the bottom of the dialog box, click the Copy Button. | Ronnie- I am new to Vista and I am running in to a similar, but different problem. I am getting a UAC messgae "an unidentified program wants access to your computer" for Internet Explorer. I tried loading with -extoff. No such message. Seems if it is activex or something like that it is normal browsing of the internet. | Growler You need to identify what program/activex control or other add-on is causing the UACmessage to appear. This could be a malicious program that could harm your computer. What that message is trying to tell you is that "A program is trying to get complete and unrestricted access to your entire computer". First, determine what steps you are taking that makes that UAC prompt appear. Next, go to Tools/Manage add-ons/Enable or disable add-ons. Near the top of that dialog is a drop down menu that gives you different views of the add-ons. Using these different views, disable a block of the add-ons and then recreate the steps that make the UAC message appear. If the message does not appear, re-enable each of the add-ons in that block, one-at-a-time, checking to see if the message appears after enabling each one. When the message appears, you have identified the culprit. You can then go to the website of the maker of that add-on and make sure it is legitimate. | Now for something completely different... I went and one-by-one disabled the add-ons. All, but Microsoft add-ons. Reason being I was short on time, I felt MS was probably NOT the culprit, and there were a bunch of them from MS. Still get the message.
