| Hi, I have five user accounts, all set as adminstrator for trusted family members. However, Windows Backup repeatedly denies me access to access my backup drive (it is not included in the backup files). So, I checked my account setting and noticed that, even though "Administrator" appears next to my name, my account is selected as a Standard User. When I try to change the radio button to "Administrator," the "Change Account Type" button is grayed out. This also happens for all user accounts on this computer (Vista Home Premium). I would sincerely appreciate any advice that you may offer to help fix this problem. Also, is my backup problem related to my user account problem? If not, could you please offer any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!! | Guest

| Steve Go to Start and type cmd.exe and press Enter. This will open a command prompt window. Type: net user Press Enter. This will give you list of all user accounts on the system. Next, type: net user <account name> Press Enter. Where <account name> is one of the accounts that were shown after the first command. Repeat this command for each of the accounts shown in step one. After this is complete, click the icon on the top/left corner of the command window and go to Edit and click Select All. Press the Enter key. This will copy everything on the screen to the clipboard. Paste the results in a reply to this message. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Steve A." <SteveA@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:BE7D623A-D9C6-48E6-8F8F-C14810AD0CE6@microsoft.com... | Steve Everything appears to be normal. According to the net user command everyone is an administrator except the Guest account which is the way it should be. When you go to Control Panel/User Accounts and click the 'Change account type' option, the only possible choice will be automatically select. In other words, if you are already an administrator, then the Standard User option will be selected. If you try to select the Administrator option, then the 'Change account type' button will be unavailable, because the account is already an administrator. About the problem with the backup drive, is this an external USB drive or...? Can any of the other accounts access this drive? Do you get any error messages? Are you accessing the drive in Windows Explorer or does this only happen from within the backup program? -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Steve A." <SteveA@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A2FCB1EA-7E37-4838-B267-D14B7C650EAE@microsoft.com... | Hi Ronnie, Thanks again for your help. I came to the same conclusion about the user level interface after I ran your net user command. I was initially somewhat concerned about a possible virus, although Norton Antivirus says I'm good to go... Regarding the backup, I have three physical hard drives. C and D are internal, while I is a portable USB hard drive. I'm attempting to back up C and D to the I drive. I have also attempted to back up C (only) to the D drive. On either occasion, I get the message "Access is denied. (Ox80070005). What's weird is that I can fully access all hard drives in every other way (through My Computer, for example). All other users can access all drives, as well. These drives are also shared and fully accessable on our home network. I did delete a previous backup (on the D drive) around a week ago in an effort to conserve disk space. Do you think that this could be related to the problem? Thanks again for your assistance in this matter! Steve "Ronnie Vernon MVP" wrote: Quote:

| I'm looking for an answer to this backup problem as well. I posted today but then saw your thread and decided to add comments since you seem to be getting responses from Microsoft. I successfully backed up to my internal D drive back in august. Ever since (first event in log showing error was on 9/18) I have been upable to do another backup. I get a warning notice in the taskbar that a backup is overdue and when I attempt to do it I receive the same messages about the access denied. Here is info from the event log. - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Windows Backup" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">4104</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2007-09-19T01:24:23.000Z" /> <EventRecordID>2947</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>Mardis</Computer> <Security /> </System> - <EventData> <Data>Access is denied. | Steve Sorry for the delay. This error (0x80070005) is difficult to track down, since it's a very basic "access denied" error message that can be associated with any program or component. What I found was a couple of references to the error when using the backup program in Vista. From the product team that handles the backup program. The Filing Cabinet : Common causes and solutions to Backup, System Restore, and Complete PC Backup problems: https://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pa...-problems.aspx File Backup fails with the following error: Access is denied. (0x80070005) This error occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\ as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points. The only other possible solution I found was from a user on these groups. He was getting the same exact error message, trying to use an external USB drive. He reported that when he change the USB port for the drive, all of the errors disappeared. If neither of these fixes work, you might want to try looking in the Event Viewer (Administrative Tools/Event Viewer) and look under Custom Views/Administrative Events for any "!" or "X" error messages that coincide with the time you last tried the backup on that drive. If you do find an event, double click the event to open it, click the Copy Button at the bottom of the dialog and paste the results back here in a reply. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Steve A." <SteveA@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:69AE3F32-A4BB-4BE3-9F6D-F29F648514CF@microsoft.com... | Hi all! Sorry for any inconvenience! I have a problem need to be resolved... The problem is, on a machine where the Guest account is disabled, as it is by default, and it has never been enabled, the output contains two timestamps that are updated each time the command is run. It looks like this: " C:\>net user guest User name Guest Full Name Comment Built-in account for guest access to the computer/d omain User's comment Country code 000 (System Default) Account active No Account expires Never Password last set [1/23/2008 11:21 AM] Password expires Never Password changeable [1/30/2008 11:21 AM] Password required No User may change password No Workstations allowed All Logon script User profile Home directory Last logon Never Logon hours allowed All Local Group Memberships *Guests Global Group memberships *None The command completed successfully. " The time/date in [brackets] will change each minute, so subsequent checks of this rule continually detect change where nothing has changed on the local system. Once the Guest account has been activated at least once, the timestamp becomes static and represents the time of the first activation. This has been observed on Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 SP1 and 2003 SP2. Now, with my purpose, the command line above will not show 'Password last set' and 'Password changable' fields...Can u support me to resolve this problem soon?? PS : My English is not good so can you help me to check it? Thanks a lot,, "Steve A." wrote: Quote:

| for remote assistance use this email to find me on windows messanger matthew.a.owens@mttnokc.com you will need to use mmc to try to solve this problem. someone has put your admin account as standard account and admin account and when that happens, you only get the priveleges of the lower account. you will have to use the account that caused this hic-up.
