Using TweakUI in Vista.

Posted: 01-17-2009, 12:52 AM
Vista brand-newbie. I installed my beloved TweakUI from Win 2K Pro. It
installed and it worked once. In fact, it even modified itself to add a
bunch of Vista stuff! (Truly!) (Really thoughtful, I thought.)

But from then on it won't run at all. (Either from the Control Panel or from
its Power Toys folder.)

I always get this message:
"Windows cannot find ;'RunLegacyCplElevated.exe.' Make sure you typed the
name [of WHAT?] correctly, and then try again."

(I have added "[of WHAT?]".)

But tThere are *two* copies of the file on my computer. They are in:

o C:\Windows\System32 and
o C:\ Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-runlegacycplelevated[and many
many more letters and numbers].

What gives?

Using TweakUI in Vista.

When I tried to obtain TweakUI, I found out that it wasn't compatible with
Vista.
Therfore I forgot about 'employing' it.

TweakUI isn't Vista-compatible, that's what happened.

Try TweakVI, instead: http://www.totalidea.com/download.php

There is a version of TweajUI that works with Vista (and Windows 7).
I believe it is version 133 (created in 2001) that worked with
Windowss 2000. It can still be found on Internet. I have the French
version, but I have posted a link to the file as well as instructions
to make it work - but that was months ago, and I do not recall
on which newsgroup.

Any way I am going to look for it on the Web.

When you have it, click on the install file. Then go to
Windows\System32\ Locate tweakui.cpl, click on it and
it will appear in the Control Panel. A shortcut on the
desktop can be created from the Control Panel.

Bruce rendered a link to 'TweakVI' and I felt free to make use of it.
That program is even better than TweakUI (thanks Bruce),
and thanks for your help also, cqui3.

I refuse to accept that answer. TweakUI is far too handy.

Has anyone else got any thoughts on the subject?

Au contraire. It has one edition called TweakVI Basic, which "contains
hundreds of tweaks." I am downloading it (13 MB) as we speak.

Actually, there is a freeware version of TweakVI available for
download, or one can pay to upgrade to TweakVI Pro.
