VIA network adapter driver update fails

A new VIA network adapter driver posted on the windows
update page by microsoft causes the VIA Rhine II Fast
Ethernet Adapter on my VIA A7v8X-x to stop working. I am
running an athlon xp2600+ cpu with 512mb RAM on the board.

When I 'roll back the driver', all is ok.

This non-working (for me) driver is reinstalled when I use
automatic windows update which I prefer to use. Can I
prevent this from happening?
