Is it actually capturing any video, i.e., does it capture some and then
stop, or does it try to capture and stop capturing zero?

video capture stops while trying to capture thru IEEE 1394 port

Auz, I had the same problem. It doesn't lie with the type
of computer port or capture device but with the capture
software. I use movie maker and in the tools, options
menu, I have an advanced tab. In that tab is a picture
duration timeset that has a default setting. if you don't
change the default setting, the software cuts off the
video by the default time.
Since I don't know your software, I can onl;y assume that
somewhere in that program your using is the same type of
default setting. search your software help for video or
picture(mine)duration. You might find it there
